Welcome to the Oceanic Passages Website

Oceanic Passages will be held in Hobart, Tasmania at the School of Art, Hunter Street from 23-25 June 2010.

In many vessels, and with a plethora of itineraries and motivations, travellers traversed the oceans under the aegis of empire: imperial explorers, indigenous travellers, traders, migrants (forced or otherwise), and a rich polyglot labour force of sailors, among others.

Oceanic Passages seeks to bring together a diverse range of researchers to engage in meaningful interdisciplinary dialogue about the role of travel, mobility, and oceanic geographies in the British Empire and in the Pacific region. We are interested in new approaches to the analyses of imperial voyaging; in the circulation of material culture, artefacts, ideas and people; and in the contemporary postcolonial aftermath of the imperialism of the eighteenth / nineteenth centuries.

Keynote speakers for the conference are Professor Rod Edmond from the University of Kent, Professor Anne Salmond from the University of Auckland and Professor Nira Yuval-Davis from the University of East London.

Conference papers are invited and 250-word abstracts are due by 1 February 2010.
