The Perilous Journey of Alice Gertrude Kenny - a Hobart History Walk
Tuesday 26 June, 3 - 5pm
Led by Miranda Morris
Allow me to introduce Alice Gertrude Kenny whose eventful life will form the narrative as we walk the streets of Hobart. What sort of place was this when she arrived in Tasmania as a single female migrant in 1858? How was the colony representing its indigenous population and its convict past? In what ways did its inhabitants attempt to position themselves at the centre rather than at the edge of empire? What role would a single working-class English woman play? As we map her life from household servant to matron of the New Norfolk asylum we will reflect on the way her search for reputation and autonomy collided with the strictures of class and gender, and ultimately placed her in the dock of the Supreme Court in a trial that dominated the press, drew the highest dignitaries into its orbit, and brought down a government.
The tour will begin at the end of Elizabeth Street Pier, and will conclude outside Parliament House. Following the walk, conference delegates are invited to have a drink in the Lobby Bar at Hadleys Hotel at 5pm.
The cost of the walk is $15. There are limited spaces for the walking tour, so please make a reservation by emailing caia@utas.edu.au.
